Review guide:
The display is more important when you're choosing a laptop than when you're
choosing a desktop. 15 inch displays are satisfactory for most everyone.
Notebooks with smaller displays are lighter. Most laptops such as Sony, HP
Compaq , IBM Thinkpad, Lenovo, Acer, and Averatec have wide-screen displays.
Weight, brand reliability, and tech support are very good for these bargain
computers. The basic warranty is usually sufficient for most users, especially
considering the cost of extended discounted warranties vs. the cost of
replacement over a 5 year period.
A processor speed of 1 GHz or greater is sufficient for most needs. For most
users who primarily access their email and surf the internet, the major
performance issue is their internet service provider's connection service rather
than the computer itself.
We recommend 512 MB or more of memory, which most of the laptops and notebooks
have. Having more memory actually speeds up the overall computer performance
because the operating system does not have to access the hard drive disk as
often (running programs are cached (temporary storage) to memory. The hard drive
disk storage (40 GB or better) of most laptops and notebooks should exceed most
user requirements. Make certain that the notebook has a CD writer ( CD-RW ) to
allow you to save your important data.
Wireless adapters are very nice to have and are standard for most of these
laptops. Battery life, like the weight, is more important for the traveler. Most
laptops can run for several hours on battery power. When traveling, we recommend
a 12 to 120 V portable power inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter
socket to run your computer (and charge your cellphone) while in the car or
plane..
Laptop weights range from about 3 lbs (great for the frequent traveler and
student) to about 6 lbs (still very light and portable and just fine for around
the house and occasional travel). The notebook weight is less important unless
you travel a lot or attend classes.
