The Pearls were an early 1970s girl vocal duo from England, featuring Lynn Cornell and Ann Simmons. They released a number of singles, the most successful being "Guilty", which reached #10 in the UK Singles Chart in the summer of 1974. Cornell and Simmons were originally part of The Vernons Girls, and formed The Pearls with help from Phil Swern. After her time with the Vernons, Cornell, who had dated Adam Faith, became a solo singer, and had minor success with "Never on a Sunday" and a Christmas song, "The Angel and the Stranger". Cornell's 1960 recording of "Never on Sunday" reached #30 in the UK Singles Chart. The Pearls were created to capitalize on the fact that some obscure 1960s soul and pop music records were becoming hits on the dancefloors in the UK. The Pearls released cover versions of "Third Finger, Left Hand" (a b-side from the Martha and the Vandellas hit single, "Jimmy Mack") and The Ronettes, "You Came, You Saw, You Conquered". Their records were issued by Bell Records. The Pearls also recorded some originals written for them, including "Lead Us Not into Temptation", the Chris Andrews penned "Yo Yo" and "Wizard of Love" (although these all failed to chart). Their previously unreleased cover of The Everly Brothers, "Bye Bye Love" appeared on their compilation album, A String of Pearls (see discography). Cornell married session musician Andy White; the drummer on the album version of The Beatles' first hit, "Love Me Do". Cornell and White later divorced and she now lives in London. After the Pearls had disbanded in the mid 1970s, Simmons (neé Ann O'Brien) went on to join The Ladybirds. [1] |
